Plastic is a petrolium based product and paper comes in this case, from a tree. So, when we recycle or reuse, what happens to paper? Reusing paper bags isn't as dependable as plastic, but they can be used as brown paper wrapping for things, scrap note paper , they can be wet and mulched and turned into paper mache or made into new paper, and my absolute favorite, paper bags can be torn up and thrown in the compost the way you would leaves!
Trees are a renewable resource. Right now, a very poorly understood and mismanaged resource! Let us battle on this point on another blooded field...lots of room for improvement!
Now, those slick plastic bags are water proof, oooohhhh, they usually don't break as easily as paper and frankly, they look sparkling clean...ahhh!Nothing natural about those puppies! Made from a none renuable resource, they all at one time appear in seemingly limitless abundace and yet have register as problematic. Decadence. Unless you have a dog and or take these things back to the store again to reuse, they are a pain to recycle. Oh there are the swim suites and the lunches and stuff, but that isn't a consistant thing for most of us. The real hard core recycling has to be a professional job. So we have to save them up and drop them off somewhere to do it. Unless of course, you are one of the lucky few that have curbside recycleing! I like that, I wish we had that.
So why are there no choices? There are choices. Many stores don't assume you want a plastic bag any more. I have had lots just ask if I wanted to bother with a bag at all! There are the stores
that sell reusable bags too. Some of them are heavy plastic which makes no sense at all, twice as much plastic to use twice as long. Really, who do they think they're kidding? Some sell fabric bags to see if we will go for it. If you take bags of your own to use most grocers won't care, it saves them money! This is the Canadian experience anyway. I personally like the cloth bags best, you can make your own too!
Sometimes I think paper is nostalgic. It could be that plastic was just cheeper at the start and looked slicker matching changes in society generally in North America. Marketing. The whole fast food, fast living thing.
Options at the till are about change. The stores are seeing what their customers want and or trying to make the shift easier for us so as not to loose our patronage.
Go cloth and go wild!

I know that some people usually prefer the paper to go into the plastic bag for extra strength.
