It is also puttering/sputtering as if I haven't warmed it up on a cold day - or as if it were running out of gas.

It's an old Volvo with 90K+ miles. I hope it's a simple fix!

You just need a tune-up. Gasoline contains some sulphur, and if it isn't burned cleanly, nitrogen sulphide gas (rotten egg gas)comes out the exhaust. Your car splutters because it's running too rich - that is, it's pumping too much fuel into the engine, and it can't burn it all completely. An easy fix.

More than likely the catalytic converter is plugging up and the build up is smelling like sulfur. Probably needs to be replaced. Not a cheap fix, about $200.
