I'm not a fan of giving up a young D-man with huge potential for a 40 year old.

I wouldn't say Welch had huge potential, he was decent, but not good enough to hold down a top 6 spot.

That being said I still don't like the fact that we traded a young defender for a 40 year old who will most likely retire this season or next

Noah Welch has had a few chances in the NHL with the Pens and was sent back each time. The Pens also still still have two great defensive prospects in Kris Letang, only sent back this year because he is so young and it would have been one year sooner that the Pens would of had to resign him(would be the same year as Malkin and Staal). The also have the college kid Alex Goligoski from the University of Minnesota that the Pens are really high on.

I don't mind the trade if Roberts can be effective and be a good leader for this young team, hes a gritty veteran with playoff experience that is something this team needed more of.

I think this is a really good deal for the Pens, Roberts won't be around a long time, but thats not why he was brought in. Noah Welch does have potential as a defenseman, However, he is an Offensive defensemen. Pittsburgh has plenty of tools to score goals and they will have those tools for some time (Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Oullet) and they already have a great young Offensive defenseman in Ryan Whitney to complement the veteran Gonchar. What the penguins Lack is Defensive defenseman, which is why Welch does not fit into the mold of the penguins. Kwiatkowski (who they also got) certainly isn't as good as Welch, but he's more defensive minded.

Gary is an UFA at seasons end. His future with the Pens will prolly depend on a good playoff run and which role Michel Therien puts him in. Roberts is a recognizable name for hardwork and toughness. His experience will be invaluable to a young team like the Pens. Roberts has always been one of my favorite players since he broke in with the Flames. A former 50 goal man who could do it all and even though he had 2 neck surgerys and past his prime this guy is still a warrior and a leader and as far as fits go...is exactly what the PENS needed. Aside from that Roberts will prolly sign on with Calgary next year for one last hurrah in Cowtown. Well one can only hope I guess.

In all honesty I like Roberts as a player, he never stops working and is a valuable asset for a playoff run. Not sure if he will stay with the penguins after the year, but I think he has 2 years left in him.
In terms of giving up "potential", it really doesn't mean much until they have proven something. As a leafs fan I have seen management give away potential, such as Eric Fichaud, who was said to be the next best goalie, the guy never panned out. I think it is a good deal for the pens.

Ever notice how much Welch was being bounced between the Pens and Baby Pens. He was only around when they needed a defenseman. Clearly wasn't one of the best this year. I wasn't too happy about it when I first heard it then I thought about it and thought well he just couldn't make the NHL this year. Not sure on the deal with Roberts either. I guess they decided Recchi wasn't enough of a leader or something. I'm not a big fan of the trade but was probably a value trade.

Im from pittsburgh and love the pens and agree this wasnt the best trade but he will give rechii some help in the older leadership on the team and we really need that i mean he will be in the leauge for another 3 years id say he is a solid player and im glad we have him but the price may have been a lil too high
