I've been a member of a health club since 1999. Each year the dues keep increasing and now are up to 900 per year. Is this common? Do I need a club to be fit?

$900/year that's insanity, you must live in a big city somewhere. I would bag the "Health Club" and go find a hardcore gym that's a dungeon and go train there, it will be 1/2 that price.

You do not need a club to get fit or stay that way. Especially one that charges 900 per year. The are programs like Healthy Lifestyles through insurance programs that reimberse you a percentage of your gym fees if you attend so may times per year.
Other options are DVDs or Videos. Kathy Smith is a great one from beginner to advanced. Booty Ballet is new and sooo much fun, it would definately be worth a try. In the mornings Discovery Channell has workouts that you can do along with them on regular TV. Cables On-Demand feature offers TONS of workout options under the Fitness catagory.
You do not need a gym, just a little motivation.
Walks are always good, but I find that sqeezing in at least 30 minutes of TV exercise every day is dropping the pounds and I'm still able to feed the kids and pay the Mortgage.
Good Luck

depends on what you do at the club. If you do mostly cardio workouts, then a health club is not necessary. If weights and swimming are more your thing, then you might need to retain your membership. Dues tend to increase, based on your membership contract. My current health club's dues stay level, but I wont be continuing my membership there, because I dont get my money's worth there.
