It isn't....there's just become a stereotypical view of emos (especially here in the UK) that people have jumped on the bandwagon of hating emos. It's just another preference by people, which people have condemned despite not knowing anything about it. Emos may self harm in SOME cases...but is that any different from the different groups in society who do drugs?? The self-harm issue is irrelevant, surely it is someones right to do what they want to their body as long as it affects no-one else?
There isn't truly anything wrong with being emo, no more so than there is being any other sociological group, for example chav, goth, skater etc etc. Media hype and an over-exaggeration of what people who are emo believe, think and do has just led to the social steriotype which now exists. I think the question kind of shows what I mean, you have heard and may believe that being emo is bad (not saying you do, I have no idea, but its a possibility) but have no idea why - its reasonless arguments from media and authoritative figures which has fed the hatred.
P.S. I am not emo incase you think I am and are therefore biased, just a teenager sick of steriotyping (I wear checkered Vans, apparently making me emo :S) and pointless, propaganda fed hatred

Being Emo is not bad. It's just that when people hear about "emo" they think of people who are self-injurous, and cry all the time. But the thing is, there are a lot of emos that don't cry, a lot of emos that don't cut. People have no clue what emo really is. Emo is not a bad thing. Originally, emo was a style of music. Eventually the term spread to include the type of wardrobe Emo bands wore, making emo a style of dress and a style of music. Finally, it spread to being the people who listened to emo music and who wore emo clothing. A few emos started cutting and crying and writing bad poetry. But the funny thing is, so did some jocks. So did some stoners. So did a lot of people. A lot of people cut themselves. It's just emos who have that stereotype.
To be honest, emo is not bad. It's just the idea of the stereotype of emo that people get mixed up in, that people don't know about.

Emo music is good.
I guess maybe the whole Emo fad though is such an obvious trend that people do to fit in. I mean the clothes are just as expensive as those that preppy people wear yet many Emo kids hate preps. Its like you are conforming to be a nonconformist. Ahh.

Because "emo" is a recently created trendy sub-culture that will probably fade within a year or so. It is only a culture du jour. If you are emo now, you will be a has-been in 2 years.

"Being emo" used to mean something completely different. Somewhere along the line, emo did it with goth and that bastard child is what today's "emo" is. It's great music, but the whole emo image is just stupid.

Because they are non-conformists to the accepted standards set up by society in general.
That's it! Short as I could make it and still cram all the critical information into one relevant sentence containing all you need to know.
