The first Grand Lodge was established in 1717 in London. Other than that, the earliest documented history of Freemasonry was in 1356 with the Formation of the London Masons Company; and the publishing of ordinances governing the Lodge at York Minster in England

There is no definite answer. Much of the real history is shrouded in folk tales.

What is now guessed at is that although the English created their United Grand Lodge of England in 1717, Freemasonry (that which is not operative or real stone builders) has had its roots in the Ancient Mystery schools of Greece and the Fertile Crescent. Some say even ancient Egypt.

Much of the Scottish Rite was brought to France from Scottish expatriots living within the circle of the Jacobites. Many of the degrees got invented then, some of them very subversive to the English and to the French governments.

I suggest looking up a book or two by the authors of The Hiram Key, Book of Hiram, Second Messiah. May find it worthwhile.

Some authorities say it could be based on the earl god of the roman legions mithras soldiers who followed this sect eventually completely gave up worship and it devolved into a secret society, other societies also are often alleged to have been closely connected with the masons such as the knights Templar and later medieval stonemasons formed trade societies along the lines of earlier groups mentioned.Though most masons claim the Freemasons are there to help their fellow man, most people who come in contact with them agree it is a self help group of greedy people who help each other to the detriment of others, the UK police force being a perfect example where people are promoted and given plum jobs because of membership(this is not opinion but documented by honest senior officers)

This is what wikipedia has to say about the history of the freemasons.

The first Grand Lodge formed in Freemasonry was The Grand Lodge of England (GLE), founded in 1717, when four existing London Lodges met for a joint dinner. This rapidly expanded into a regulatory body, which almost all English Lodges joined. From the 1750s onwards, two competing English Grand Lodges vied for supremacy - the "Moderns" (GLE) and "Ancients" (sometimes spelled "Antients") Grand Lodges. They finally united in 1813 to form the present United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE).

Goose and Gridiron, Home to a London Lodge forming GLEThe Grand Lodges of Ireland and Scotland were formed in 1725 and 1736 respectively. Freemasonry was exported to the British Colonies in North America by the 1730s - with both the English "Ancients" and the "Moderns" Grand Lodges (as well as the Grand Lodges of Ireland and Scotland) chartering offspring ("daughter") Lodges, and organizing various Provincial Grand Lodges. After the American Revolution, independent US Grand Lodges formed themselves within the State boundaries. Some thought was briefly given to organizing an over-arching "Grand Lodge of the United States", with George Washington as the first Grand Master, but the idea was short-lived. The various State Grand Lodges did not wish to diminish their own authority by agreeing to such a body.[40]

the oldest existing written record of Freemason Craft is known as the Halliwell Manuscript or Regius Poem written by an unknown author about 1390. Although written nearly six centuries ago, it shows Freemasonry to have been very old even at that date. However, during the Operative period it was started at the building of King Solomon's Temple
