There has been a talk in the past to promote inland waterways in India by connecting/linking its major rivers. But was shelved because of other priorities and compulsions - both political and economic. Since waterways are cheaper and good alternates to other means of transportation, the Planning Commission mooted the idea. The circumstances have changed drastically since then, yet it would be a bold step on the part of our leadership to plan and more so implement the project. No doubt, benefits out-number all other odds in this project.
