A would suggest a fish. A betta in a 5 gallon tank would be able to handle the time you are at the other place and wouldn't be hurt at all if someone forgot to feed it for a day or two. Maybe even one for each place!

I think your best bet is to go with some fish. As someone else said, a single male betta would be a great choice. But you could also get a 5-10 gallon and put some different small fish in instead. Fish can go a couple of days just fine if you forget to feed them. No need to take them back and forth and no harm if your dad forgets to feed it for a couple of days.

No pet is easy to take care of. Each animal has very specific, important and complex needs that should not be taken lightly. Not just feeding, but walking or pen cleaning, bathing, play time, regular vet visits and lots of love. You need to discuss this with your parents, especially the one at whose house you would be leaving the animal. Will that parent be willing to properly and lovingly take care of that pet in your absence? This is not about you or your parents. This is about the proper care of an innocent animal that soley and completely relies on you for its health and happiness. If you cannot get a pet that you can take back and forth with you so that you can ensure it is taken care of properly, then the parent you would be leaving that animal with would have to not only be willing to go through the basic motions to care for it, i.e., feeding and walking or cleaning its pen, but love it completely so that it is not turned into a bad animal. Getting a pet should not be a cavalier act, but should be carefully thought through in detail. You need to research various animals to determine their needs and levels of care and whether you and your parents are willing to invest the time and love needed for that animal.

A dog would be a good animal... especially for someone that forgets to feed.. like your dad might.. A dog can usually last *at least* 3 days without food.
BUT
You can put water & dry food out for a dog and it will eat when it is hungry.

My second choice would be a cat.. they can find and eat mice or bugs when they are hungry. BUT they are also candidates for the open feeding.

GOOD LUCK

Chinchilla's are not easy to take care of. I've had two and they are moody and vary in personality, some are very sweet and some bite. They are like any other rodent. They use the bathroom alot and They typically dont like to be held. They are hard to catch if they get loose and yuo have to give them dust baths (buying special dust and allow them to roll around in it which makes them little mess makers).
Cats are easy, you can leave him in your room with his litter box and he'll be perfectly happy. My cat Harley LOVES being in my room, he either sits and looks out the window or curls up on my bed. They have automatic feeders and water dishes if you are worried about your dad forgetting to feed it, plus they cry a little when hungry so it may be harder for your dad to forget..otherwise they have carriers so that you can bring it to your moms.
Fish are easy as well although not as loving or fun.
Birds need a lot of attention with cleaning their cages, althought this doesnt have to be done everyday, they dont eat alot so you can leave bird seed, or raw vegetables and water in their dishes and itll last. I have a maroon bellied conure and hes very easy to take care of, he loves being in his cage so i dont have to take him out often and i just line the cage with paper towels so its easy to clean.

have fun with whatever you choose!

If you both your parents don't mind, consider a smallish dog. Something that both would like. That way, you can have him at both houses with you- and you don't have to worry about cages and junk like that. Just a few toys, and some food and each house, and he could be your perfect pet. He'll be your best pal, and won't stress over the constant change. My parents had a Bichon before they had kids, and they would take him to my grandparents house, and he would fall asleep in a corner and they would forget him when they left. So he would just sleep over Grammy and Grandpa's house. :) As long as he is comfy in both houses, he will adjust fine to two homes.

Maybe a guinea pig? A dog or cat would probably be too much of a commitment and require a lot of work for all involved. Guinea pigs can be very affectionate, are cute and cuddly and if desired can be taken with you on longer trips to either of your parents house.

Rats make excellent pets. They're like little dogs in many ways. They're smart and learn tricks, they also travel very well. You can leave one for a few days with plenty of food if you have to (although I don't recommend it). Or you can take it with you when you go between homes.

Would you be interested in a bird? It will stay in a cage, you can clean it out once a month or so. Your dad or mom wont have to worry about it. You keep food in the cage. I guess he would maybe have to pay attention to their water.
