and it left nasty marks, it looks like a botched suicide attempt, my boss asked me if everything is alright at home, should I break down into uncontrolable blubbering and tell her no everything is not ok so I can go home early?

Tell her you think you need some "alone time" - then go into the bathroom for like a half hour and just read or something - she'll think you're all crying and sh**. Then splash water on your face and go back out, that will add effect. When she asks you if you're all-right again, tell her you need a couple of days to pull yourself together. That can help. But what if she takes it too serious? You know, invites you over for dinner, give you charity, stuff like that? It can come to the point where she would be knocking on your door giving you a casserole. Wouldn't it make you feel guilty or would it make you having regretted lying?
