put in a small amount (a tablespoon or so) of cooking oil--any kind will do. Obviously, this is fine for the animal--even good for their coats, but the oild prevents the mosquitos from landing on & successfully laying eggs in the water. It's one way they cleaned up the problem of the little beasties & the malaria they carried while the Panama Canal was being built.

This isn't rocket science. Get a smaller drum. If the water is sitting long enough to get wigglers, it can't be good for the animals, it's stagnent. Empty it every couple of days and refill. The animals will love you for it.

I've found some stuff you can put in the water that is safe.. Got it at home depot.. it comes wrapped in water soluble plastic so you don't have to touch it.
That is if the oil and other natural stuff doesn't work for you.

Put a little dove dishwashing liquid in it, won't hurt your animals will drive away the skeeters.
