Ok, I seriously am quite in love with Hot Topic, but my parents are not. They keep telling me it's dark, Stanic and *gag* evil(????). I have no clue why they think this. They're always telling me not to shop there, of course I don't listen. Anyhow, does anyone think that Hot Topic is actually dark/evil/Satanic??? I think it's prefectly fine for goth/punk or emo people....

Hot Topic is "all about the music" as they say, and since they carry a few different genres of music in their products, including black metal of course your parents are going to be concerned. But not everything in that store has to do with black metal. Don't they have stockings and patent leather dress shoes? How bad can those be? And honestly...Hot Topic has seriously lightened up. I remember when I was 14 and started shopping there, they were so much better. They had a lot more Gothic Fetish merchandise, and now...it's just all stripes, plaids and some skinny jeans, not Gothic at all but more so Punk and Confused Emo (Emo is really preppy, not dark at all). Your parents have nothing to worry about, let them know that. My mom didn't like the store either, but she knew I was only shopping for what I liked to wear, not because of it's stereotype. When you start doing drugs, THEN your parents should be worried. But for shopping in a youth-geared store...No.

My parents are JW's as am I, and the only stores they will not under any circumstances go in are stores that carry Ouiji boards. Fortunately HT doesn't have those. Actually...my parents werent even concerned about the store but more so the employees, I guess they were a little freaked out by them.

To sleepyOne...God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. We don't think gays are evil nor are we scared of them. We believe what is written in the Bible about "man not lying with another man" or woman with another woman. Sorry we have a conscience...

The store itself, no, just absurdly overpriced. But you can buy albums for outspokenly satanic and irrefutably negative bands there. Maybe your parents heard one of the clerk's favorite records over the intercom and freaked out. (You can't really blame them, though. What loving parent wants their child to consider Disturbed's 'Stupify' their theme song?)
As for the store, it's a store, and nothing else. They sell merchandise; that's what they do, and they're quite good at it. They're not goth, punk, emo, new wave, or an other new subcultural flavor of the week; they just carry stuff some folks consider punk, rockabilly, goth, et cetera, depending on how well punk, rockabilly, and goth is selling at the moment.
In any account, you're a minor living with your parents, so the wisest, best and most beneficial thing to do is respect their wishes. Don't bother them about it and try to break them down with persistent complaining; that's for little kids and it would make you appear less mature in their eyes. If you want to get a purple flower hair clip from Hot Topic, simply say, "Mom, I'd like to go into Hot Topic to get a purple flower hair clip; is that okay with you?"
Be respectful of your parents' wishes at all times. If they're not comfortable with it, don't fret; it's only some hair clips. You can probably buy something similar later on, and you will be more mature than if you had pitched a fit over it. Not that you necessarily would - I leave this note for the less mature among us. ;)
God bless, and have a nice day.

Satanic Store

The only thing evil about Hot Topic is that they charge outrageous prices to sell trends to people who want to be different (like everyone else).

Some people will always equate evil and good with what's on the outside. You're not going to change your parents' minds. But don't encourage their thinking by acting rudely about it - then they'll think they're justified in their opinion, and that somehow Hot Topic has rubbed off on you to make you evil! Treat them with respect anyway, and it'll work out for you in the long run.

hot topic is a popular 'gothic/emo' store. its NOT evil. my friends and i use to shop there in high school, before being gothic was considered cool and we were called evil. hot topic has changed alot since then. and it still wasn't evil back then. honestly though you should take your parents in there and explain that its not evil, let them look around and see all the stuff there and they shouldn't have a prob with it anymore

Are your parents hard-core Christians? Hot Topic sells some things that could be associated with the "dark arts" (pentagram jewelry, incense, things with fairies and imaginary creatures) I know people who would not let their daughter read "Harry Potter" b/c it deals with magic which is, in their eyes, Satan's power.

Also, Some people don't understand piercings and tattoos, and what we don't understand we fear, so they could associate punks and emo people with devil worshipers.

And, I think they sell some gay pride items there, and as we all know devout Christians + gay = bad.

So I guess it could be any of those reasons.

My mom said that too. Remember that older generations feel diifferently about things. The store is not satanic, just different!

Tell them to go jump off a bridge. If anything is satanic I'd say it's wal-mart.
