Ok I will address this one from 2 stand points.
1. If God is real one would be so screwed when Jesus comes back if they were not following the word of God. So following Jesus is a good choice as He is the key to Heaven's gates.
2. If you follow Jesus' teachings then you will treat each person you interact with as if they were the most important person in your life. Making people feel good about themselves and good about about you has many advantages. What you sow so shall you reap kind of thing. So following Jesus is a good choice.

define jesus. You can follow jesus in terms of his identity as a person/embodiment in a religion or you can follow the spirit of his teachings which go beyond and are in any religion, sect etc.
Bad choice or a good choice depends on what is the end result you have in mind. You've already made a bad choice if you have already decided what would be good for you and bad for you.

I cannot speak for you or anyone else. What I can tell you is that I have been doing things my way for years and years and boasted about it, too. I actually sang "My Way" (Frank Sinantra's hit) as my personal anthem. You know, I believed I was doing it right. Honestly!
But, I wasn't! I cannot tell you how many times I fell down - hard. And, each time, I wondered what happened. "I'm doing what is best; why am I going through all these hardships?"
Again, I was wrong! I did not know Jesus the way I do now. I knew His story but not His power, His glory, His ability to touch my heart so sweetly and tenderly in a way that no man could. I did not know His love.
I do now and I wouldn't give it back for anything, ever!
I now have a peace I never knew before. I am calmer in situations where normally, I would have tripped and told off anyone who went further than I cared for them to go. Now, I treat differently with others, in a calmer and adult manner. I refuse to be tripped off but, I tell them off without the fanfare.
For me, it is the best choice. Jesus is!

I cannot remember the source of this idea, but it is someone rather important to history (my apologies for my weak memory), but the thought went something like (big time paraphrase I'm sure):
If you were to believe in Christ and were wrong then the worst that has happened is that you have behaved well and treated others well. However, if you do not believe in Christ and are wrong then there's hell to pay (that last bit was my little twist, sorry).
Maybe not the best basis for belief, but interesting nonetheless.
