the skin is the largest organ in the human body and provides us with an excellent example for explanation purposes. The skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous layer. The epidermis is the outermost layer of skin. It consists of epithelial tissue in which the cells are tightly packed together providing a barrier between the inside of the body and the outside world. Below the epidermis lies a layer of connective tissue called the dermis. In addition to providing support for the skin, the dermis has many other purposes. The dermis contains blood vessels that nourish skin cells. It contains nerve tissue that provides feeling in the skin. And it contains muscle tissue that is responsible for giving you 'goosebumps' when you get cold or frightened. The subcutaneous layer is beneath the dermis and consists mainly of a type of connective tissue called adipose tissue. Adipose tissue is more commonly known as fat and it helps cushion the skin and provide protection from cold temperatures.

It is absolute rubbish if you believe that the skin is the largest organ in the body.
It is, in fact the second largest organ in the body.
Although, that is not always correct. Theres a bloke who lives round the corner from me who has enough skin to go round a B & Q store 14 times - but generally it is the second largest.
There is a builder called Clive who has the largest organ in the world. He was working on the stage at the Royal Albert Hall in London - for the sake of our American cousins - London is in a country called England, and they've got big red buses.
Anyway, Clive, who has never been to America - or anywhere else really, was banging his hammer on the floor of the stage which caused a violent shaking which dislodged the organ (in case you didn't know, the Wurlitzer Organ at the Royal Albert Hall in London - the one in England - is the largest organ in the universe after the one on that little green planet just to the left of Pluto).
So, the organ crashed down on poor old Clive and his hammer.
They never did find him again but the E flat won't play any more which is an awful shame because that note is used more than any other during Handel's Messiah.
For those of you who know nothing about classical music, there is a part during Handel's Messiah where the entire audience stand for about 4 minutes.
This tradition got started because the King of England (I forget which one) was at a concert where the Messiah was being played and stood up to stretch his legs. If the king stands - everybody has to stand, and that tradition has been kept ever since - everybody stands at exactly that point in the concert.
Now, a new tradition has started whereas every time the E flat should be played the entire audience remove the hammer they are carrying in the inside jacket pocket (or handbag) and hit the person in front of them on the head.
This explains why the back row at a concert of Handel's Messiah cost 10 times more than the others.
I hope this has been of use to you.

Your liver? Your heart? No! It's your skin! Your skin is a self-repairing organ that covers and protects your body.
