It really depends on the crop, and your planting zone. Many don't mind the cool temps, but other seeds will simply rot if planted before the ground really warms up. Butter beans need it warmer than green beans, but peas can be planted while the ground is still cold. In fact,If you wait too late, the heat of summer knock them out before you get a good harvest.
If you just can't wait to get going, plant the peas and some radishes as soon as you can work the ground. soon after, you can get your salad greens going. Corn can go in earlier than most people think, but the ground must be thouroughly warm for melons, squash, cucumbers, and pumpkins.. That's why many people give them a head start indoors.

Generally speaking, anytime after the last frost is acceptable. In South Dakota, that's about April 15th. As long as it is not getting below 32 degrees at night anymore this spring. That's always worked for me, but this year I read on the back of my packet of watermelon seeds that they need it a little warmer. So I'll wait on those, but everything else is going in after the last frost.

i start my veggies and stuff in the house about 6wks before the last "killing frost". ussualy before mothers day. they are also "hardened off" (set outside out of the wind and direct sun) every warm day before they go into the ground.
try Mother Earth News on the net and see what they have to say!
this mag is worth every penny to a gardener and earth freindly person!

It is best to wait until after the last frost. Check the weather in your area online for an extended forecast, but it is beast to wait until late March.
