There is a fortnightly magazine called Computer active it uses very much plain English and does small projects each issue guiding you through step by step. Its less than £2 a fortnight. I started off with it and it was a great help. They have a web site http://www.computeractive.co.uk/ (free) which has downloads of security software and other free stuff, and a forum where you can post questions if you are stuck. You'll soon be up to speed, don't forget to put your hard earned knowledge back on answers in the future. Good Luck and enjoy

If you want to get the hang of your operating system, some of the best books for beginners are the "In Easy Steps' series. For example, Windows XP in Easy Steps
http://www.ineasysteps.com/books/details/?1840782870
the full range can be viewed here
http://www.ineasysteps.com/books/browse/
and they can be obtained easily via amazon online or perhaps ordered from your local bookshop
An even more basic approach is taken by the Easy series from QUE
http://www.quepublishing.com/series/series.asp?st=44441&rl=1
colourful and diagrammatic, they are perhaps the simplest introduction to a topic such as Windows XP or Vista; again, available from Amazon online. For example, Easy Computer Basics is available here
http://www.amazon.co.uk/UK-Easy-Computer-Basics/dp/0789735105/ref=sr_1_1/202-5223557-7323857?ie=UTF8&s=books
There is a BBC guide to using a computer here but it requires flash player to be installed on your pc

Books does not help much for the beginners. Ask some real people (students, neighbors, friends) to help you first. It is the fast way to learn. When they show you, you should write some notes for future references.
When you comfortable with Internet and browsing. Internet helps a lot to learn more.

You can go to your library and look for the many differant titles you can choose from.
Also usually on your computer you can get a manuel about your computer on how to use it and changing things on your computer.
Go to computer web site and pick out the manuel .
You can usually just put www.before the name of the computer then add .com
EXAMPLE MY MACHINE IS E-MACHINE SO I PUT IN
www.emachine.com
Hopefully this will help you this is how i learn about doing things and i just started back in 2005

The Dummy's books are really pretty good and they have them for almost any subject. You can get them online or at just about any bookstore.
