It's a tier 3 school that is a little easier to get into than other NY schools in Manhattan (e.g. Columbia, NYU, Fordham, etc.) Depending on what you want to do for a job, it will be difficult to get a job at a major NY firm coming out of Hofstra unless you finish at the top of your class. However, from what I understand, Hofstra students that perform relatively well are able to find jobs at smaller firms.
Also, transferring is also an option. If you finish at the top of your class, major schools are notorious for wanting to steal top ranked students from their less prestigious neighbors. If you want to live/work in the NY area, but aren't able to get into a better school right off the bat, Hofstra is a pretty good bet. I would go to the best school that you possibly can and then work very, very hard. Good grades during your first year will follow you throughout your entire law school career, will determine your job, and will give you the opportunity to transfer if you do extremely well.
