I have always had this need to help others, but I'm more of a "tough love" type. If you are or know a social worker, will you share with me some experiences? If not, don't you find life to be more rewarding if you're helping out in some way?

Absolutely helping someone is the best thing you can do for yourself. I have been a recipient of social benefits from time to time and I also help others whenever possible.

I think the most difficult thing to experience is when you want to help but there are no options left to help. In other words, as a social worker you may have to take children away from their parents out of suspicion or speculation that may not be proved but there is potential risk, or knowing that someone will go hungry because the system is not fast enough to respond.
It is a tough thing, and I think this is why most social workers end up detaching themselves from people because it is a lot of weight to carry around.
BUT, don't let me discourage you! I am sorry if I did. I am hoping this small bit of insight may help you avoid emotional traps out there. More power to you.

No people are ungrateful they only want something for free.Spoiled.Cant appreciate your going out of your way to be nice.Everything is only for them and what they can get out of it .Sorry but for 23 yrs.trying to be good to people and never got a return care back. But helping children is always a reward you could never stop enjoying that.Life is rewarding by getting off your hind end and working and supporting your family or yourself. Not letting the goverment do it.Rewarding is over when you work and your partner works and all you can do is pay the bills barely ,barely have money to feed your family ,buy medicine if your kids are sick. Its a never ending goverment thing.Be rewarded every day by getting up and your alive and healthy and can have a house , your health and your family. That is a reward to me.You feel sorry for people until you find out they have money they just live off the welfare system and act so poor but have beer cig.,desiener cloths, drugs, and complain they have no money to pay the 20 goverment house payment a month whatever.

I know a number of social workers. Its a tough job. Low pay and high stress. You do a great job for society, but there is a ton of paperwork and impossible case loads. If you love it you love though.

Life is always more rewarding if you want to help out. I don't know how old you, but check out Americorps if you are looking for some social service opportunities.

i definitely find life to be more fulfilling when you're helping people. nothing wrong with being a "tough love" type; it just shows character. but i really love helping people. i feel that it is our basic responsibility - it is what we have to do as humans. so many people forget that. i'm not a social worker, but i am currently in university studying for a master's in public administration. i plan on doing nonprofit administration of some sort. maybe eventually international aid-related stuff.

I have always felt good when I've been able to help others, whether scholastically, or in any other way. I do not like "tough love" social workers--as they frightened me very much when I was young. They didn't help with making decisions--they told me what I HAD to do. This was wrong--a good social worker will give one all of his or her options--and work with one on a plan.

I am not a social worker, but I've helped alot of people along the way. In my career as a government worker, I've helped people navigate the welfare system. I also spent many years trying very hard to help people re: their health. I felt such a feeling of a job well done. I like helping people.

Yes. Answers is the perfect example some times. But you still never know if you helped or not. It is your own perception that gives you the feeling you are helping. It's not as easy to help people as we might think.

Glad to meet you, Miss Tough-Love-Type! We share something already! See Ya!! @8-)

. A certain part of your life should be devoted to helping people less fortunate than you are. It does have its benefits. I get it from seeing some one on the way up after being down in the gutter and knowing that i played a part in his turnaround. If you are helpng people now, by all means keep it up.

I think that is what makes my world go round is helping others. I feel very happy inside when I know that I have done, or said something that may have helped someone even if in some very small way. It doesn't even matter to me if anyone knows about it, I just like knowing about it myself.
