Hello everyone, I am very interested in starting a website, but this whole thing is new to me.
My first question is simply this: How do you buy a .com address?
Also, do you buy the page flat out or pay by the year? I have seen so many websites that are no longer being used, I can't imagine someone is paying by the year for something they don't even use anymore.

Now, I am wondering, with the free sites, can you use most of the functions you'd e able to when buying a page? Things such as having people register as a member, search options etc. The site will be quite interactive.

Most places sell you one by the year. Alternatively, getcher self onto msn live and they will give you one for free! But then you're stuck with *their* website software. Go to places like godaddy.com.

Note that you pay for a name and you pay for the space (host) - two separate things. The name points to the space. You can get the name for about $6 plus or minus, the price varies. You can get the space for various prices. Like, Yahoo! offers the combination (name plus space for $12 per month, I think it was...)

I've used GoDaddy in the past.

They're simple, cheap, and it works.
