I always thought it was a sad song because of the lyrics "so dishonestly leave a note for you my only one
And I know...you can see right through me
So let me go...and you will find some one".
All the lyrics as sad but then in the end afterwards puzzles me because they are standing arm in arm with serious looks on their faces in front of the machines. Can someone explain?

both. Its about letting somebody go but also about continuing on. about sacrificing yourself and your relationship with someone so that they may go on and have a better life.

He's leaving for a very poor reason (whatever it is) which is the meaning behind the lyrics you listed. Then he realizes he made a mistake, that's why later in the song he says "Scream my lungs out and try to get to you." After he let her go, he realized he was being an idiot and wants nothing more than her back.
