A close friend showed me a website which had a picture that jumped out at me. It was in the late 1950's the US Marines were walking down a street in Beirut with a rebel (CSA battleflage). I found that picture very ironic for today. In the US that same flag is a lightening rod for debate. Is there any consensus in lebanon addresses the lebanese separatist groups flags? Wouldn't uniting under one Lebanese flag regardless of one's political views show some civic maturity as a nation. In the US we still have confederate flags hanging from flagpoles. People are still living in the past everywhere I guess.

What you said would be ideal...when everyone unites under the Lebanese flag.

I hope to see that day soon.

WOW COOL BLACK & WHITE PICTURES!!!! Look at these ugly M14 rifles!! Oh, the question isn't about the rifles? Ok, I love the M48 tank. Oh? Its not about the M48 tank either? I'm sorry. OOOHH, the rebel flag you mean??? Okay, now I get it!! How did you notice they were carrying a rebel flag in the first place? You're into details? WOW, you amaze me! You have quite a sharp observation. Are all Americans as observant as you, or are you "smarter than the average bear"?

Perhaps those marines got infected as soon as they arrived to Lebanon, and decided to go with the confederate flag? The reason why they are carrying a confederate flag in the picture will remain a mystery. I'm really eager to know why though?

Should the Lebanese abandon their sectarian flags? Yes because they all bring civil war memories. Besides, I say this with no bias: none of these flags have not one bit of an artistic touch. They are PLAIN ugly!!! The Lebanese flag on the other hand is one of the most beautiful flags in the world. I do not say this because I am Lebanese.

Thank You.

PS to Milo: I wanted to give you a thumbs up man, but I clicked by mistake on the thumbs down. I'm so sorry, I don't know why this always happen when I try to rate your answers. Apologies.

I agree with Smutty about the lebanese flag.........It is one of the most beautiful flags in the world, and all lebanese people love it.
The sectarian flags are just that..sectarians, but you'll not find 1 lebanese that dont tell you that love the national flag.
Have you seen the multitudinal manifestations in downtown Beirut??
Which other flag did you see there but lebanese ??
Lebanese are joining.......and are doing it under the Cedar's flag
May be things will take a bit more time than in other countries......but finally they will happen...
In my opinion, to have the sectarian flags is not showing that a country live in the past......(in USA that is common)
To have the sectarian flags can be good for not forget the past, and avoid the things that happened .
No one country has to forget the own past, because the future has to be built over the experiences (good and bad ones) from that past.

Sectarian flags are only reflection of sectarian minds. So abandoning these falgs will do no good if abandoning the sectarian minds doz not come first.
But yeah sure loyality to our beloved country must at least appear in the respect to our Lebanese flag.

Tell me about it, here in SC and GA you see the confederate flags everywhere, on the houses, on the cars, T-shirts, unbelievable! There will always be a little group that won't wanna blend in with the rest. C'est la vie. You can't change everyone, so i choose to accept people the way they are and if i don't agree with what they believe in i don't have to socialize with them. You always have another option.

First of all thank you for sharing this with us. I got shocked when I saw these pictures.

I think yes the Lebanese should be under one flag and as I see for the pictures Lebanon has suffered a lot, so let them unite and stop being such a divided people.

God Bless Lebanon

Yes abandon it, is there any question about it?
Look at Lebanon, it used to be the Paris of the Middle East, now Hezbollah has made it a bomb site. . . .what for, oh for their own self interest and their archaic beliefs.

Thanks starfish for sharing this site with us, I lived the civil war and it was a painful experience.

I totally agree that we need to shed all these layers of different identities so we can finally get that sense of belonging to the same flag.
