When you won't worry that something catastrophic will happen. Don't start with 3 hours. Start with smaller increments of time. Go to the store for a few items for 20 minutes, then work up to an hour or so. Be sure that your child has someone to contact who can be at the house within minutes should something go wrong. Can your child check in via phone while you're out? I'd hope he/she could call to check in and let you know that he's home. After school is easier than another day because there's homework to be done, etc....
However, with all of that said, I think you should find out from child protective agencies about how old the child can be and home alone....you'd hate to be reported to Department of Social Services. There are afterschool programs that are free, or low cost. Call your child's school, and find out more.
Most importantly, how does your your child feel about being home alone? What about having a friend over, too---one you select intentionally who is mature and a good influence?
Good luck. You know your child better than anyone else. Use your instincts to do what you know is right. :)

Find out what your State Law is on leaving a child alone. And then ask yourself and family/friends if they think your child is mature enough and has enough information to stay home alone. I personally think leaving any minor home alone is a very dangerous situation. There's too many perves and stoners.

I was staying home alone when I was about 10 or so and it was fine. Depends on the kid though, a very mature kid will be able to do this at a younger age.

Find out what is the legal minimum where you live, and then if your child meets that requirement, decide if you feel they are mature enough to handle it and know how to reach all appropriate emergency contacts, and that there is an adult nearby (neighbor or friend or family) that can get to them quickly if needed.

It is relative to the maturity of both you and the child, but I think you would be wise to consult local law as to this matter. You could risk a charge of child endangerment or worse!
