One reason is the over emphasis in our society about sex and sexuality. You cannot go to a movie theater, or even watch television, without sex being a topic and openly discussed. It is a no brainer then, that teens get overwhelmed and inundated with sex.

Change the norms and values of our culture to begin to make a dent in this. Additionally, parents need to take an active part in the lives of their teens. Talk to them, listen to them, share values and beliefs with them. Etc.

I think the answer is a lot more complicated than just irresponsibility or lack of/improper sex education. I think it has a great deal to do w/ self esteem and the kind of love and affection kids receive while growing up.

We all want to be touched and loved. We all want to feel good, special, and know that our needs can be met. When we are babies, we cannot meet our needs on our own. We need our parents to give us that unconditional love and care at all times.

As we grow, we need to see that look of love and respect in the eyes of ppl around us. We need to feel that love and approval. We need to be free to talk about our needs and concerns w/o backlash. We need to feel sacred and valued for ourselves.

I think a shortfall of all of this strongly contributes to teen sex and teen pregnancy. The teen is often looking for love and affection and equating sex w/ that.

Even just teaching about abstinence, in my opinion, is NOT enough. Children and teens need to know WHY they should choose to abstain. They need to know how valuable they are. They need to know what true love and intimacy is and how sex figures into that.

I have many theories on this sometimes i wonder if it is to trap a boy in a failing relationship, need to have someone to love them unconditionally, lack of birth control knowledge, trusting a young boy(never do that!), lack of sex education, Thinking it will never happen to me, but above all the parents not having a big enough role in their lives to make sure they know all of these important things. Again these are just theories and my opinion. I think you need to ask yourself why you asked this question though best of luck.

I think it's the parent's responsibility to make sure and be open and available to their teen regarding sex. Teens don't want to talk to parents about sex because they believe they'll get chewed out and so they take matters into t heir own hands. I also blame how non-chalant and desensitized society has made sex seem in the eyes of teens. They see it everyone in everything and no one cares.
