#2-How to play
Learn the proper strategy for the game you intend to play, so that you get the best return.
#3-Play where you're appreciated
This means you never marry a casino you only date them. I always keep at least 3, usually 4 hotels, that I give enough play to receive comp rooms sometimes meals and other extras.
You ask two very good questions>That are going to be difficult for me to give you an exact answer without knowing your level of play. Do you play 1 or 2K per day - 5K - 10K - 50K - 100K - more/less? - By play that does NOT mean you have to whip out $1,000 and put it on the table or in a machine. The casino wants "play" they want you to play for hours> $20 per hand blackjack for an hour is 1K in play(50 hands per hour avg) .25c video poker(max coin) for 1 hour is 1K(800 hands per hour avg)
There are some hotel/casinos that still "appreciate" 1 or 2K >Some of the Station Casinos will send you room offers for that level of play(Palace, Boulder & Texas Station)>Orleans seems to favor a stay & play, if you stay there and play there they will invite you back with some sort of room offer based on your play, just like every other casino but 2K per day should get you 2 free night offers. Downtown hotels & locals hotels are much easier than 4-5 Star strip hotels obviously.
For 5K or more per day you will do very well at 2 - 3 star downtown/locals casinos.
You're just going to have to experiment> very few hotels are going to tell you exactly what you have to do to get this or that comp. If you like a place, and they have the game(s) you like to play. Give them 2 - 3K in play and see what that gets you in the way of future room offers. Another way to feel them out is to play for a couple of hours then ask for a comp for the buffet/coffee shop/etc.
#4- Manage your bankroll
That's not just splitting your money up day to day. A "win goal - loss limit" strategy so that you do walk away a winner is very important.
Everything I have said only scratches the surface, of a very complex system. To learn more, here are a couple of great books to read.
"Comp City" - Max Rubin
"The Frugal Gambler" - Jean Scott

Later: Green Valley Ranch & Red Rock would not give you the time of day for 2K>The Fiesta Henderson which is much nicer than the Fiesta Rancho will offer discount rates for 2-3K per day. >For the same play, Palace, Boulder & Texas station will send you a calendar listing free & discount nights, comps are much easier also.
(The Fiesta Henderson has great video poker, as good as any in LV. But, I like Silverton better, they have the same games and treat me better for the same play)
The very best casinos "overall" for taking care of players & having great games for the "low roller".
Main Street Station
LV Hilton
Silverton
Orleans
We go for 2 weeks(or more), 2-3 times a year and have for over 20 years. The only time we pay for rooms is when we get an extremely low rate and don't want to move to take advantage of more comp nights. Our average play runs 5-6K per day. >It can be done if you work at it<

All station casinos (Sunset Station, Red Rock, Texas Station, Boulder Station, Green Valley Ranch, Fiesta Henderson, etc.) offer the best comps I have ever seen. These casinos are just outside of the Las Vegas strip, but this is the only place I recommend for "comps."
I am not much of a better $10-20 per hand and I get a free meal (in any of their restaurants) every time. There are also lots of other things you can get (free slot play, free tournaments, etc.). They are extremely generous.
Also, when you feel you should have a comp, you need to ask, most of the time they will not tell you.

The last time I was in Vegas I played the slots as usual. I played in several casinos but made it a point to get a "guest card" before I even started to feed the slots. You can get these at the customer service desk. Now, I get offers of comps from several of the four star casinos for rooms, shows and meals and I didn't spend thousands of dollars. I was there for four days, took $2000 with me to spend, came home with $1500 of it - just playing the slots. maybe they send me the comps because they want their money back - who knows, but I always have a great time there. One piece of advice though, never take more than you can afford to lose and never, ever, take a credit card or debit card with you when you go to play. If you spend your limit, go sightseeing. There are a lot of really neat places to see there. This is just my own personal opinion.

Poker Palace, Jerry's Nugget and the Silver Nugget. Although Station Casions offer you good deals on Hotel rooms, they do not give you cash back on the points you earned. Poker Palace and Silver Nugget do. Jerry's Nugget does also however they offer less amount of money per point. Yeah Stations offer you gifts and you can use your points for concert tickets, movies and hotel rooms. however if you are in a penny pinch, they cannot help. Poker Palace even sends mailings to you every month with a coupon that gives you at least $5.
Silver Nugget is small but you do get snacks if you are there at the right time. They also have good paying games there and Bingo is one of the best in town. i know cause that's where i go for bingo.
These places are good for gambling but if you require a place to crash afterward, there are motels but i wouldn't suggest those to anyone. have fun and good luck.
