I have Windows XP. The Disc Cleanup is compressing my old files. It's been going for almost an hour and is not even a quarter of the way through. It's never taken even remotely this long before. Is my computer ruined? Do I have a virus? I haven't loaded any new programs... I just can't imagine what it would be. Let me know if you need more info - I will check back again.

This is not a virus or other gremlin. Sometimes after an abnormally long time it will continue, in other cases it won't.

I hesitated about posting this as it involves the registry, but this fix from Microsoft should eliminate your problem

Good luck...

You might want to run your anti-virus and check for spy and adware. I had a similar problem last year in october and november. To make matters worse, my operating system wouldn't load and got the dreaded blue screen. It turned out I had a trojan hidden in my system that my McAffee Viruscan did not pick up. I had to use Spybot and the Yahoo Anti-Spy.

If that doesn't fix the problem I suggest you contact the Manufacturer (like Dell), and they can troubleshoot the problem for you.

In my experience, I frequently set the laptop to defragment at evening till now i pass to mattress a minimum of as quickly as a week or so. that's the sole ingredient that I easily have ever seen that looks to velocity up disk freshen up. i've got not appeared around for the different utilities to apply and make it quicker. Set defragment to run till now you pass to sleep, then disk cleanup till now you pass to sleep the following day. this would possibly not seem to take see you later.
