I've tried club penguin and runescape, they both suck.
i want something that is good even for those who don't pay for it. also, it doesn't have to have good graphics, it just has to be interesting.

If you don't care about the graphics you may want to check out Gemstone. It's essentially a text based RPG -- I say "essentially" because it apparently did introduce some graphical elements when it introduced a new (and optional) interface a few years ago. I never used that interface so I don't know anything about the graphics. It used to be a fantastic RPG and I played happily for years. They made significant changes a couple of years ago and because of time restraints on my end I never really made the change, so I honestly couldn't tell you what it's like now. But for years I would have sworn it was the best RPG online.

U should try to play guild wars. All u need to do is to have 20$ with u to buy the game and voila u can now play ti online on ur comp with other players. It's alot better than WoW because u don't have to pay $15 a month and the monsters and storylines are nice.

As far as FREE rpg's go... Knights Online has a good following.. Graphics are solid.. storylines are average. It's Korean based, but run in english.

there are some games that are like mmorpg or are mmorpgs that are free to play and some are one-time pay...
i like neverwinter nights 1, you pay less than 20 dollars for the original game discs...and you get to play online for free in over 100 different worlds and adventures online.
neverwinter nights 2 and guild wars are a bit more expensive but you only pay for the discs and you get to play online as long as you want.
there a few sites that offer free rpgs...dont quote me if they are completely free...silk road, martial heroes, guns, rose online....
