Interestingly the world's last great super power did not initiate the meetings. It was the government of Iraq. Although both Iran and Syria have been saying for quite some time that they want to talk. Amazing what can be done if people seriously talk with one another. Diplomacy should have been tried in the first place. But the shoot from the hip cowboy wasn't going to do that. He had his own agenda and it didn't matter what others thought. Now look at him. What a mess.
Politics can be a dirty business. As to "axis of evil"; as the old adage says, "if you are going to play with pigs you are going to get dirty".

Because they are winning. Bush and his neo-conmen handlers know that they can't win in Iraq without the cooperation of Iran and Syria.
Nixon went to China in 1972. If Bush wanted to salvage any shred of statesmanship for his legacy he'd be flying Air Force One to Tehran as we speak.
He has nothing to lose; he'll never have to stand for election again and as he stands now he's pure poison to his own party. He still has time to do a thorough house cleaning by chasing the neo-conmen from the temple, restore our constitutional rights, and reopen Iran in the same way Nixon reopened China.
It would make up for a lot of blood on his hands. Stringing the arch-traitor Wolfowitz up from a sturdy lamp post on Pennsylvania Avenue would cement his place in history.

Those "Axis of Evil" are people who can blow up the world if they wanted to. I would rather have the US talk to them instead of arguing with them. After all, if we talk to them, how would that get them any madder? Doing nothing and arguing with them only makes those two dangerous countries more dangerous.

I say we don't complain.. for the first time they are actually DOING what we asked them to do... I disagree with about 99% of what Bush does.. but I won't chastise him for making the correct decision.

You are right on. There must be a real problem, no one can possibly considered these terrorists neighbors. Syria is responsible for the bomb attack on one of our ships. How soon we forget. Iran arms the insurgency.

Maybe she is hoping to offend Iran to point where they attack the US troops and give Bush a reason to invade.

Desperation is exactly right. What else would cause Bush to admit that he made mistakes?

I was beginning to think this Administration couldn't spell the word diplomacy, much less practice it. It's about time they go this route.
