I'm fairly recent college grade a BA but my work experience is in admin work.... I'm looking for a "career change" (or start!) in a more rewarding field. Anyway, my plan is to participate in an internship that is part time or paid, which I know exists because I've applied to a number of them, but work at a place like Wal-mart or Target for supplemental income. Will places like those even consider my application? I'm not being snooty, but I wonder if they consider people with degrees and 5+ years of professional work experience. What do you think?

I haven't applied, so this is a hypothetical situation. Please read the question carefully. Thanks!

I know what you are asking. I can tell you my experience in trying to get part time jobs. I have a BA in Soc. Work, am a credentialed teacher, have a Masters in Psych, am a licensed, certified hynotherapist, and a few more things. The point IS that when I apply for a part time job, even, anywhere, I am told, "You are overqualified." This is the worst answer they can give me. I tell them, "I am ONLY overqualified for unemployment!"........still, I DID manage to land a part time job at UPS. I was paid well, and I liked the job! I am just a lady who loves school. I have used the different degrees, etc. in different positions as I went along. Now, I am older, and only want part time jobs.

Maybe the thing is not to emphasize your qualifications to Target or Walmart. Then again, considering employment turnover is high, they don't care.

I tried applying to a call center for a cell phone company and they turned me down. I had experience as an engineer working on cell networks, and their fear is that they'd be investing time and money into someone who would leave for greener pastures. Understandable, really. Less of a problem for a big box retailer, though.

No that's just a nice way in saying they are not intrested in you.

I also was not refering to you DUH!! But was refering to the word OVERQUALIFIED......anyways with so many degrees and experience why the HELL even bother.
