my partner and i have used condoms for the past 12 months but we want to stop using them and use some other form as we do feel that you loose out on sensations (especially him!). i'm slightly over weight and over 30 and am pretty sure that because of this i won't be prescribed the pill. i've heard other women say that the injection is not good as it made them gain weight and i don't want that and i also don't like the idea of the coil as i imagine that it prevents a fertilised egg from developing, therefore its like having an abortion. i also don't fancy a 'cap' as i imagine that would involve me having to pre plan when we are going to make love and we want to not have to do that anymore and i also don't fancy the idea of putting my fingers up myself to insert it! any suggestions...

You are incorrect about your assumption regarding weight and the pill. Your doctor will take a look at ALL of your risk factors and decide if you're a candidate. Many overweight people use the pill and are perfectly safe doing so. The thing that needs to be assessed is your blood pressure.

If you've never had a full-term pregnancy, then the IUD is contraindicated for you. The uterine cavity is too stiff to accommodate the IUD properly and can result in complications.

The shot actually has 2 different dosage levels of hormones. You can have a higher dose if the doctor thinks that your weight is too much for the standard dose to maintain. Also, not everyone gains weight or has bad side effects from the shot. I certainly didn't.
Again, your doctor can tell you this...never just assume.

Before you start canceling options for yourself, you need to discuss ALL of your choices with a trained physician who can assess your physical health and help you to decide which options would be best for YOU.

I wouldn't worry about your weight and age... doctors are very free with the birth control pill. And if they wouldn't give you the pill, they certainly won't give you the shot. Anyway, the risks are more for 35+ smokers than 30 and slightly overweight.

FYI, the coil is really not like an abortion... the primary mechanism of action in a copper-T IUD is altering the way sperm move and preventing ovulation. Although it will also prevent a fertilized egg from implanting, this is not the equivalent of even an early-term abortion. It's 6-8 cells at that stage.

If you don't want the IUD and you aren't up for permanent b.c. like tubal ligation/vasectomy, and you don't want condoms or diaphragms, you're kind of stuck with some sort of hormonal method. The NuvaRing or a lower-dose pill may be the answer to your worries. These lower the risk of dangerous side effects and are still hightly effective.

I agree with them on the IUD. Sounds like it the only other option left. Talk to your Doc. about it.
