whats the cheapest to build a small mini halfpipe for skateboarding?

My son built a halfpipe for my grandson it cost $1800 in material
( using treated lumber), plus using marine varnish on the whole thing ( the varnish was what cost so much--he applied 4 layers). Seem to me it was about 25' x16' wide for the skateboards. On the sides, the 25' way, it was built into storage areas.
