Well, you may or may not know that firewood warms you twice. Once when you cut it and again when you burn it. It could be that he was either cold or thought about getting cold and needed to warm up. And he was pretty young when he supposedly did this foul deed and didn't realize that the cherry tree he cut down was more valuable for its fruit than for its firewood.
