Directly from MP Help:
To access the File Types tab
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the File Types tab.
Just select the file types you want to set Media Player as the default for or just hit the 'Select All' button.

All in all, dump MP for the VLC Media Player. It's free, opensource, comes with it's own codecs, and will play both video and audio files that will crash Window$ bloatware. If VLC won't play it, it's a safe bet it can't be played.
Good luck and I hope this helps.

With WMP (version 10 is what I currently use) open, go to "Tools > Options..." in the menu bar.

Select the "File Types" tab and then and a check to each of the file types you what WMP to play.

When done hit "OK" and you should be good to go.
