Can anyone recommend a word of the day email service that they have used previously and found to contain more obscure words to improve the vocabulary?

I use dictionary.com (all references linked below) although I know other people who use Merriam Webster's. I don't use yourdictionary.com, but it looks interesting. Dictionary.com also has a Spanish word of the day, which is handy, as does Spanish.about.com.

Note: the words returned by these services tend to be not widely used, but also not extremely obscure. There are other services that send you freak words, which may have been used once back in 1925 but never since. These are not those kinds of services, which may be interesting but not terribly useful for improving vocabulary with words that somebody might actually understand.

I would say Oxford they seem to be most up to date with new words arriving by the year - amazing - I actually wonder how many words are there in the English Language.

Oxford is trustworthy for its dictionaries. You might try http://www.oed.com/services/email-wotd.html

Be wary of popups advertising these as many of the words are out of date or very rare. Some even advertise their words as 'worthless' and are for amusement e.g. http://home.comcast.net/~wwftd/
