I like the whole themed anniversary gift thing... The traditional gift for the first anniversary is something paper. The modern gift is a clock.
I like going with the traditional ones, as it requires creativity. For my paper anniversary, I bought my wife a single share of AT&T stock. I had the certificate framed, with a plaque reading "Communication is the key to a good marriage." Yeah, I think I'm funny...
Search the internet for Paper Anniversary and see what comes up.

Well paper is the 1st year anniversary traditionally. You could incorporate this as a theme. A hand made card, decorations. Something that is very sweet but time consuming for a 1st wedding anniversary. If you are up to the challenge is paper lingerie, it sounds funny, but is very sexy, and truelly shows how much you care by tsking all the time. Sorry but just going with the theme, but I loved it and it meant so much to me, made the night magical.

why not buy him something small to go with any of his hobbies of interest, then set up a romantic candlelight dinner(order out or cook).
Play romantic music that he likes to listen to during and after dinner, have your saved wedding cake just for the two of you, some wine or champagne and strawberries ( or whatever he enjoys) and spend the rest of the evening being romantically involved with each other. It's a special day. ENJOY! Congratulations and may you have many more anniversaries to share together.

This list has been compiled from an extensive list of sources. Most agree on the basics, but have slight variations. The only significantly different list was the alternative modern anniversary list of jewelry... that came from the Jewelry Industry Council.
Keep in mind that these are gift ideas. They are just suggestions to make it easier to choose a gift. If you decide to give an anniversary gift that doesn't fit the list... that's fine. The only way to really go wrong with an wedding anniversary gift is...to not give one at all!

Well, for my second anniversary, we did not have any money.... so we both were creative. I downloaded a pro sho gold for a free trial and made him a nice video of our wedding pictures, with some romantic songs in the back ground. My husband is not as romantic as I am, but he loved it. He in return wrote me a love poem. we went out to dinner and had a wonderful night together.

You can go with the traditional list, but that is boring.
My recommendation is something romantic-dinner out and a movie he would like.
Maybe his favorite candy all tied up with a ribbon and a love note of whatever naughtiness level you deem worthy. ;)
Happy pre-anniversary!

First anniversary is Paper, so give him tickets to a sports event or music show, a movie, you can go to together. Or magazine subscriptions. If you are filthy rich, stocks and bonds!

We got a couples photo done. It was wonderful, we also went camping. Cheap and really romantic. Flyfishing and other wild life things.
Also, we used them as Christmas picture(cards) and gifts that year for our family.

The traditional gifts are: cotton, paper and clock. Try to be creative with those.

Just a nice dinner and time together. (cooking him dinner, that is.) Make him a nice home-made card, and something that has stemmed from an inside joke.
