Looking for a good book to read. I haven't read anything for pleasure for several years (been consumed with reading school books). I was wondering if anyone could tell me of any books they found interesting to read and enjoyed. I'm not in to cheesy romance novels. I have read: The Hobbit, The farthest away mountain, and Bridge to Terabithia, but again this was when I was around 16 years old or younger. I'm looking for something a little more adultish.

I read the bible also several years ago. Glad to say that reading it is what lead me to become and Agnostic at the age of 18 then to an Atheist at the age of 20.

I know you said more adultish, but I'm one of many adults who love Harry Potter. It's really good reading, not too childish, and you'd be amazed how fast those pages go. If you can't get around the youthful stigma of the series, though, here're some more of my long time favorites:
The Belgariad/ The Mallorean (two 5 book series by David Eddings) --fantasy
The Incarnations of Immortality (a 7 book series by Piers Anthony, though in my opinion he shoulda left well enough alone with the first 5) -- fantasy/sci fi
Pillars of the Earth (1 book) Ken Follet--Historical fiction (mideival europe)
River God (1 book--there's a sequel, Warlock, but I haven't finished it yet, and the jury's still out) Wilbur Smith -- Historical fiction (Ancient Egypt)
Happy reading!
(and I loved Bridge to Terabithia..read that many times over)

I recently read "the accidental" by Ali Smith- highly recommended.
I also recommend stephen King- heart in Atalntis is awesome :)
I also like Dosoevsky a lot- crime and punishment, it's not a light read, but he writes beautifuly- so does Tolstoy :)
if you are more into Fantasy- read David eddings... but I think that's less "adultish" though I don't belive books have age... if you can understand the language- that's all you need :)
good luck!

Are you into Sci-fi/fantasy books? Check out Brian Jacques' Redwall series, or George Martin.

Try a new author: Where Did This Come From? by Larry Nocella. It's a recent book with a fast moving plot that raises lots of interesting questions. Link to Amazon below.

If you liked The Hobbit, try The Riftwar Saga by Raymond Feist. It is actually a series of 4 books but once you get started, you won't be able to put them down.

Are you only into fantasy type books? If you want a good book, that is not over your head, read Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.
