The leadership is selected by the individual parties, & the party w majority of members is the Speaker of the house for instance as stated previously. The party in the majority selects who they desire to be the actual "leader" (ie Nancy Pelosi)

The leader of each also has responsibility for committee assignments which is a very important & politically charged power. Some committees are more powerful, & hence more desirable & prestigous.

Also members of the Senate are elected for 6 year terms, & generally speaking are more tenured with respect to political experience, as many (but not all) Senators served in the House first.

Speaker of the House is third in line to be President in the event of death or incapacity involving both President & VP.
