I'll be starting school in Hempstead (Long Island, NY) in the fall and need to find an apartment in the same area during the summer. I've never lived on my own before so I'm very new to the experience. Any suggestions on what I should look for and where I should look for it?

Previous poster is correct around the surrounding towns. South Freeport is fine. You should look into Long Beach. It's a nice beach community with bars, restaurants, beaches close to shopping and about 15 minutes away from Hempstead. There is a bad section of Long Beach located north east of the LIRR to Long Beach Road. All of the other areas are fine. There are a ton of rentals. Ifcyou need help contact via e-mail and I can refer you to a good agent in the area. Also, check craigslist.com and type in Long Beach under Rentals.

Not hempstead!
Not uniondale, or freeport, or roosevelt.
Very bad, very bad.
I can't imagine why anyone would want to live there, unless parents are paying for everything.
Way too high in rent.
I just left myself, and many people are leaving because of rising costs in housing, mainly, and taxes, and school taxes.
PS I grew up in Freeport, and so don't think I'm an outsider- take it from aomeone who knows.
