I need help coming up with an idea for my social studies lesson plan for my Frog and Toad unit (they are children's books if you are familiar with them...). 2nd grade level. Any suggestions would be HIGHLY appreciated!

It's been a while since I taught elementary school, but if memory serves, Frog and Toad were always helping one another. Could your Social Studies unit be about helpers in the community?

Depends on which Frog and Toad book you are using for the unit. Are you basing a lesson on one specific story in the book or the whole concept of all the stories? Friendship is a excellent topic. You could use thinking maps with several of the stories. There's a story about spring being around the corner....seasons is a theme (but it's more science I guess). The Christmas Eve story could be used with a holiday theme lesson. Or just the lesson of "giving is better than receiving".

My son's class wrote their own version of a Frog and Toad adventure and then made it into a little play. It was performed for a PTA meeting to wild applause.

The children learned about the differences between frogs and toads, their habitats, what they eat and how to take care of them if they got one of either as a pet.

Their vocabulary sheets for the time they were reading were all based on the books.

hope that helps.
