A lot of scary partial information here, more apocalyptic than it needs to be. I wish I could offer The Complete Real Story, but I can't.
I have however read "end of the world" too many times here not to comment. I don't think "the world" is supposed to end, but a certain history will, and some new history will be beginning. I've heard the phase that begins where the Mayan calendar ends called "the fifth sun".
It's time to look for real community and get to know your neighbors. The passing era has been of individualization and exploitation, the coming era is about relationship and healing.
It won't just be easy, but it's necessary and inevitable. It's up to us whether it turns out well or badly.

Isn't the World ending according the Mayan Calender on Dec 21, 2012? Which would be the Winter Solistice and that is why we know that is the correct date for those who may question the calender. The Earth will complete one full revolution, which is hard to explain but in short the Earth wobbles as it rotates so between the wobbling and rotating this will be when it is finally completing a full revolution.

The Mayans had a timetable that stops abruptly in the year 2012. Some speculate that the Maya could foretell the future, and that their calendar ends in 2012 because that is when the (human) world will actually come to an end.
Also, they say that by 2012, Southern California freeways will be so crowded, they will grind almost to a halt. (That is going to suck!)

No. the entire element is a hoax. The Mayan calendar did not account for bissextile year days (Feb. 29). Technically the "end date" of the Mayan calendar already got here and went...and the international did not end. the international gained't convey about December 2012, until eventually Obama is re-elected. Then i assume it is going to.

It is apparently the last year of the Mayan calendar, used by the Mesoamericans before they were conquered by the Spanish. The calendar, which was remarkably accurate in many respects, did not go beyond 2012, indicating that they beleived this to be the end of the world. Five more years to go!

2012 is no different than any other even numbered year. As far as the end of the world is concerned, I stopped believing in the "doomsday" scenarios after 2000.
