On a recent holiday in Southern Spain, I saw a group of White Egrets in the early evening, flying back to their roosting place, a common sight. The difference was that the front two birds in the formation where crows. My wife also saw it so it was`nt a mistake. Is this very unusual?

If the birds roost in the same general area, they may flock together (or appear to) as they approach that common site. I've seen White Ibis and Glossy Ibis in a mixed flock coming to one site -- but the amazing thing was when they all got over the pond area, the intermingled flock split in two, with the White Ibis heading down in one area, and the Glossies in another! Seems they can travel together, but NOT sleep together. Funny.
