No, I've read all the comic strips that were written for Calvin and Hobbes and I don't believe he ever kissed Susie or anything like that . . . I don't believe their relationship ever changed from what it was in the beginning . . . Calvin hating, or thinking he hates, Susie because girls are 'slimy.'

No, Calvin was only about six or seven; he never aged to the point where he developed an interest in Suzie that way. In contrast to other boys in discontinued comic strips, Calvin was younger than Milo Bloom of Bloom County, younger than the geeky kid of Foxtrot, and older than the Peanuts gang and Dennis the Menace. It is sad, in view of Bill Watterson’s own problems, which I deduce in light of Calvin’s own dissociative personality disorder (which used to be called multiple personality disorder.) Look at Stupendous Man, the transmogrified versions of Calvin, the Calvin duplicates, Spaceman Spiff, and of course Hobbes himself. Consider the dynamics of the situation: the incessant bulling by Moe, the inescapable humiliations brought on by the teacher constantly calling him to the front of the class, etc. It is sad that in rejecting Suzie, Calvin cut himself off from the one person who could have drawn him out of his shell of isolation of fantasy, his attempts to form (imaginary) friends for himself, into a more wholesome reality-centered way of life.
