Emotional Intelligence, also called EI and often measured as an Emotional Intelligence Quotient or EQ, describes an ability, capacity, or skill to perceive, assess, and manage the emotions of one's self, of others, and of groups. However, being a relatively new area, the definition of emotional intelligence is still in a state of flux.

However, being a relatively new area, the definition of emotional intelligence is still in a state of flux. Some psychologists, such as John D. Mayer (2005a), prefer to distinguish emotional knowledge from emotional intelligence.

Emotional Intelligence is basically emotional maturity and awareness as opposed to knowledge based intelligence which may be rich in information but poor in social skills, a concept proposed by author Daniel Goleman. He has many books on the subject, the latest on "Social Intelligence". It seems like his theory is, there are many facets of intelligence not just IQ alone. Read his books for details, very informative.

A simple way of putting it would be: How well you can weather the storm or if you succumb to it.
Kevin K and Jaime have it down for the specifics.
Emotional Intelligence is the scale that identifies how well you can think through and react to your emotions. A poor EQ would mean that you simply feel and react - these are people who blow up at their bosses or completely unravel at what others would consider minor or trivial in the big scheme of things. Those with high EQs would understand why they feel the way they feel and be able to overcome the desire to strangle the life out of someone simply because they're an idiot.

Interesting enough that human in his search for the truth tend to humanize anything he is in touch with,,,,It is human emotional not necessarily God...Who said that Intelligence would be emotional?? Emotion is kind of stressful sickness we experiencing while on earth in order to organize it and not to be that ill...Even recognizing that emotion leading to stress, to inconsistency and many more we are stubbornly calling them "normal"...yes , emotion is not a foreign bodies, we just have no idea what they have been design for....Intelligence knows...that is why emotions never appear on a surface of manifested Intelligence.

It is not processing your emotions logically. It is the degree of ability you have to make choices that are not impulsive or driven by instant gratification or influenced by other peoples drama that allow you to reach longer term goals and commitments, and not put yourself into situations where you are exploited and manipulated. If you have been repeatly finding yourself embroiled in bad relationships or bad jobs, and have discovered how you get into that cycle,so that you can break it,you are developing emotional intelligence.
