most people confuse range and voice category. A lot of folks, especially after taking lessons, have extended the upper and lower ranges so that they are fairly usable. But that's not the point of voice categories, at least in the classical sense. A voice category neatly lets everyone know where you feel the most comfortable. A tenor will feel happier up high, a baritone in the middle, and a bass down below. It's a sort of home stadium advantage. ( the same general system works for women: soprano, mezzo-soprano, and alto) when someone has a light, easy, pleasing color or character to their voice, we call that lyric, it floats along, and makes everyone happy. Some folks have an amazing race car ability to sing fast, zip in and out of all those notes, and wind up on a high note before you can blink. They are coloratura singers, and yes, there are as many men ( if they would trust themselves) as women. The folks who have the vocal strength and endurance to keep shredding the wallpaper off the back wall are the dramatic voices. They don't start to come into their own, classically, until after age 35, and often later.
You need to sort out what your best vocal features are.
some people prefer the crooning voice, lots of folks are into the high thin falsetto voices for guys in boy bands, etc. some people like the screamers. Don't let them faze you. Decide for yourself where and what you sing the best, and try to develop your weaker areas so that they can tag along with the better parts.
A teacher is a good guide, simply because they have the experience ( we sure as h hope so) to say yes that's good, or no, we can make that better.
Best wishes and keep on singing

It depends on the genre being sung. Personally I'm a fan of Rand B ,which i think should always be someone with a strong voice good range but not too high pitched, Love and blues should be sultry and mellow, not sounding like a screeching cat. You can get away with high pitched in Rock Jazz and Classical pieces. As for myself I have a middle to fairly high range (I can get up to a descant when warmed , which i think lends itself to almost anything (for a girl) One thing is certain though you must have, Power of voice. You must be able to tansilate emotion into voice.
