You have a member of staff who normally works through their hour long lunch. If they come in half hour late (due to traffic problems) one morning, would you appreciate the time they have worked through lunch or expect them to work and extra half hour late.

As long as its not a regular thing it would be wise to let it go this time and appreciate all the extra hours he/she has done.
It has to be give and take on both staff and boss's side. What damage would it do to staff moral if you made them work even more extra hours.

This is a rule that the company has to establish. If the rule says that the time is made up at the end of the day. THEN THIS IS THE WAY IT HAS TO BE. If there is no rule, the employees work need to be checked to make sure that fair exchange is given and the work is signed off.

As a co-worker I keep out of these problems, as a supervisor - I make sure the work and standard of the company is up held. I have headaches when other employees feel that they are being treated unjustly. Once there is a rule, I stick to the rule.

I would - as a people manager, but my boss wouldn't. It's what it looks like to the other staff that might not realise you work through lunch and copy your lateness though - that's what my boss would say.

Got to give and take. Loyal, honest employees are hard to come by.

If you have to ask the question, you need another boss.
