the best way, in my opinion, is to constantly add to the number of pushups you do daily!
If you're doing 20 now, tomorrow you can do 21, and the day after tomorrow, 22,and so on. Keep going and in 1 month you should be able to do 50!
i did this when preparing for a tough physical exam and it worked great!

When you do a pushup, dont worry about the full range of motion. You should focus on one zone at a time. When you go down just go up enough to make a 90 degree angle wit hyour elbow. This will increase your explosive motion which can cause you to get off of the ground faster.

i suggest you simply do more, but not too many more at a time. like try doing 25 everyday for 2 weeks, then the next 2 weeks do 30 every day, and then 35 etc. i do pushups alot, considering i take martial arts, and it`s not only a way to punish, but to disciplin. i once had to do 500 pushups for making jokes, it was NOT fun. anyway, just do more incrementally, thats what i suggest

compete with someone, as you said earlier. have a contest on the most pushups and u'll be motivated to do more than 20, or even 50. bring ur friends and have a match

Try Doing your max number of reps several times throughout the day. Like when you get up, before lunch, after work, before bed. After a while they will get easier. Then increase by 5 reps every 3 days.

i can do about 80 in one set...and i got there...by doing them in sets
start off by doin 15...take a minute and a half rest and do 15 more...do it 4 times...and do it 3 days on...one day off....at first u might not make it to 15 on all the sets...but keep trying....soon enough like in a month you'll be able to try as many as u can do in one set...and you'll be surprised by the difference
