She does not like books that everyone has read or are main stream (so no best sellers). She wants to start reading some classic books. Any ideas? She is very opinionated and outspoken. Likes to read about contriversial stuff (god is fake or real, politics, pres bush, etc)

The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Either one.

Your girlfriend sounds excellent!

The best selection of well-chosen classic books I know is the Everyman Library; they're also very beautifully made and make lovely presents. I've given you a link below but they're usually available in your local store as well as on Amazon.

I think the suggestion of Madame Bovary was a good one. I would steer clear of Ayn Rand, personally, unless your girlfriend is extremely conservative politically.

Other possibilities: Anna Karenina is great, as is Eugene Onegin, and both are very romantic. Maybe Dubliners by James Joyce if she wants something shorter and less romantic. She'd probably really enjoy Catch-22 if she's into politics. Or The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon. I could go on forever...!

1984 and Animal Farm by George Orwell would be perfect!
The Picture of Dorian Gray might not be controversial to us, but it got Oscar Wilde (the man who wrote it) thrown in jail when he published it.
The Scarlett Letter by Hawthorne would be good too.
The Awakening by Kate Chopin was very controversial when it first appeared.
Dante's Inferno would be an excellent choice.
Anything by Charles Dickens would work: Great Expectations, Bleak House, Hard Times, Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield, The Old Curiosity Shop, etc. All of his books hit on the government of the time, and the dark side of Victorian life.
I hope she enjoys them!

Classic books with hardcore topics?

If you really mean classic literature have her try "Madame Bovary" it is fun and I think it is still a banned book.

Try Ray Bradbury, there is a reason schools use some of his work...

There are a million and one controversial classics... tons of musings on the existence of God... my suggestion is get her a gift card and let her find the one she wants...

Dante's Inferno etc. was a good read as well.

"You Can't be Neutral on a Moving Train" Howard Zinn

"Confessions of an Economic Hitman" John Perkins (it's very controversial even though it's on the best seller list you won't hear anything about it)

"The Woman with the Alabaster Jar" Margaret Starbird (if you want controversial, you got it!)

Also someone said Ayn Rand, she is excellend too

I completely agree with your girlfriend. Our generation of writers is somewhat mediocre. I would reccomend

-Anthem, Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged--Ayn Rand
-Anna Karenina, War and Peace--Tolstoy
-1984, Animal Farm--Orwell
-The Grapes of Wrath--Steinbeck
-Brave New World--Hexley
-Siddhartha--Hesse
-Les Miserables--Hugo
-Ulysses--Joyce
-Slaughterhouse V--Vonnegut

You could get her the book: The Truth by Al Franken. It is great to read and very well written and controversial. If you want to get a classic get anything written by Charles Dickens or Leo Tolstoy.
