An excellent book on personal transformation of being depressed and then later 'enlightened so to speak' is called
"Duane's Depressed" by Larry McMurtry.

This story is both funny and brutal according to the New York Times. I loved it because it was most appealing in terms of overcoming and the strength of the character is fully developed from beginning to end !

"Undoing Depression" by Ricahrd O'Connor.

It's a fantastic book - the author is a psychiatrist, and also used to have depression. The book is very insightful - you can feel the author is not only very knowledgeable about his topic, he also *truly* understands it from the inside.
I can't recommend it enough.

Check with your local public library. They will have a large collection, and they can check for reviews to help determine which book is the best.
