When I was a child, during the "Cold War", we were taught in school that Russia suffered shortages of food, jobs, and education. We were shown pictures of empty stores, frigid temperatures, and political propoganda against your leaders.

Whether it was true or not, that is what we were taught, and there was very little access to different information. Time goes by, but people still remember what they were taught as children, and they repeat that information.

I have met Russian citizens since then, and I know that your country is beautiful, democratic, and educated. Many people still have the old images.

Every country has a stereotype that they choose to reflect to other countries. Every country has a stereotype that they choose to reflect to themselves.

The United States of America is NOT a democracy. We are a representative REPUBLIC. Despite the "two party" system, many national issues are very complex and no single (or even two) party can represent the diversity of our peoples.

True democracy does not get the needs of minorities met. True democracy can accidentally turn into a facist society, where the majority rules and if you are not with the majority you are "out of luck".
