Our local office has the following rules:

Wagers : Any amount to win less than £1000 over the counter. Accumulator bets of stakes less than £100 over the counter.
Larger bets 30 minutes prior to event start This allows them to reduce their risk by laying the bet off with another office and check gambling syndicate fraud by cross referencing similar bets at other outlets.

Payout:

Payout of up to £1000 over the counter subject to trading business and staff available to check teller counting

Payout of up to £5000 in cash with 4 hours notice subject to availability of senior member of staff to access safe deposit.

Larger amounts paid preferably by bank transfer. Cheque can be arranged with notice. Cash only paid in exceptional circumstance and with signed indemnity from the customer.

If you go to one of the major chains then no there is not real limit on the size of the bet accepted. But some of them do have a limit on the maximum payout. It used to be around £500,000 not sure if that is still the case though.

There is no legal limit it depends on the bookie. They may not want to take too large a bet if they are worried about how much they will use.
I think the figures you are talking about should be ok.
