the most imp function of batteries are making dameons(hibernated processes)viable even on shutting down...
also used to generate clocks and timing signals..
Desktop computers have information that they need to store in order to boot properly, including date/time, the location of your hard drive, floppy drive, video card, memory, etc. They have a small battery in them that is used to power the chip that holds that information should the PC lose power (black out, unplugged, etc.). It is usually referred to as the BIOS battery. or cmos battery......
