I found C. A. Whatley's 'Scottish Society 1707-1830' useful when i was studying the period. it has alot of good background knowledge,a good starting point. Whatley is a senior lecturer at Dundee University, so the book is of pretty good standard and its actually a core text for one of my history modules at uni!
